Alabama is ranked 46th in the nation for education. There are a several contributing factors for this.
POVERTY: Poverty in Alabama has been studied and found that it is a top factor in lower education in this state. Poverty stricken communities have a harder time educating students without the proper resources. The national poverty rating is around 13%. Alabama's poverty rating is higher at over 16%.
"Persistent poverty has been linked to poor education outcomes, according to the Education Policy Center at the University of Alabama. " Several studies link poor education to poverty. No child's education should suffer because of their community's poverty level.
TEACHER SHORTAGE: There is a statewide teacher shortage. The lack of funding prevents educators from performing their jobs to the best of their abilities. Educators are paying out of pocket for supplies so everyone can have the same opportunities. Our children really are our future and we need our educators to be a priority in this state!
Workman's compensation is what certain companies is required to have to cover someone if they are injured on the job. If someone is injured on the job, they will be under the workman's comp insurance while treated for that injury. This amount is generally not equivalent to the compensation that employee was receiving. This makes it hard for someone to survive and/or provide for their family. This amount needs to be more to cover out of pocket expenses due to the injury.
For example, if someone loses a limb in Alabama the max they can get is $100,000.00. Other states pay up to $500,000.00. Alabama needs to make sure if someone is injured on the job they are paid a wage they can live off of. This is a huge problem in Alabama and it needs to be corrected immediately.
Wrongful Conviction does not just happen in the movies. It happens in real life and it happens often in Alabama. When someone is incarcerated for wrongful conviction they need someone to truly prove their innocence. Poverty and education plays a role in this as well. If someone cannot afford to fight it or understand the law and their rights, they sit in prison until the end of their sentence or paroled. Their lives could be ruined.
An integrity unit needs to be created so professional researchers and legal experts can review these cases. The men and women that are wrongfully accused and convicted depend on the truth and someone listening and willing to help. This could happen to anyone at any given time. We need to do everything possible to prevent this from happening.
Legalizing marijuana has been discussed in this state since 2012. Most people have tried marijuana at least once in their lives. Most Americans agree that recreational and medicinal marijuana should be legal. There are 23 states in the US that have legalized recreational marijuana use. There are more pros than cons and Alabama has to progress with the citizens here. If legalized it would still have laws to follow such as being 21 years old to possess any amount, only people with a license to grow it will be allowed to grow it, and several others.
There are many benefits of marijuana. Medical is the main reason as it treats depression, pain, anxiety, helps cancer patients with appetite, pain and more.
Legalizing marijuana will help with the economy by creating tax revenue and jobs. It will also end the enforcement of marijuana laws and the illegal marijuana market. This cuts down on the incarceration rate for jails and prisons.
The Lottery has been stopped by religious organizations in this state every time it comes up to vote on it. The lottery here in Alabama can tremendously increase funds for education and healthcare. There are huge economic pros to having a lottery here.
The argument has been that Alabama has more lower income families and we do not want to encourage those families to spend their money on lottery tickets, but they are driving to other states spending more money to get lottery tickets.
The surrounding states get a good bit of Alabamians money because people will drive to the state line to buy lottery tickets. We need the benefits in this state. This will help us to not be known for our poverty levels, which has an effect on everything. It could help make Alabama a better tourist state along with boosting the economy for the citizens that live here now.
Alabama has the highest incarceration rate in the country and the most dangerous and deadly prisons in the country.
Prison is not just about the facility itself but what goes on in these facilities. Prisons are necessary but the purpose of a prison is to rehabilitate and correct someone's behavior and mistakes. This is not happening in this state.
Sentencing guidelines need to be the same across the board for everyone.
The Habitual Offender Act needs to be done away with completely. This law is unfair and used in the wrong way to mass incarcerate the citizens of Alabama.
The Death Penalty needs to be abolished.
Specific qualifications for the Alabama Department of Corrections employees at the facilities. A psychological evaluation every six months. Being searched by non-facility employees when entering and leaving the facility.
Incarcerated citizens should have better mental and physical healthcare. They should have education and skills training for when they reenter into society. They should have help finding housing and employment. They need to be prepared to live a functional life and be able to provide for their families. They will be getting out one day. We need to make sure that they are ready in every way and truly rehabilitated.
